Papier-mâché
Papier-mâché is a creative technique that has been used for centuries to create decorative and functional objects. This technique, which combines paper with glue, formed the basis for some of the products within our collection. Although we provide the material with a protective coating, papier-mâché remains sensitive to water. As a result, we do not recommend placing real flowers in our Papier-mâché pots/vases but rather choose a dried bouquet.
Manufacturing process
The process starts with collecting paper as a basic raw material. The paper is torn into small pieces or shredded into fibres. Next, the paper fibres are soaked in water to soften them. This helps create a paper pulp that can be easily formed into different shapes. After the paper fibres have been soaked sufficiently, they are mixed with a glue-like substance to create a firmer and moldable mass. The papier-mâché pulp is then formed into the desired shapes and structures. After shaping, the papier-mâché creations must be thoroughly dried in a drying room. Once these papier-mâché creations are completely dry, they can be sanded to smooth any rough edges and create a smoother finish. They can then be painted, varnished or otherwise finished to protect them and enhance their aesthetics. To finish, we may do so with a coat of decorative paint.
Care instructions
To ensure a long lifetime of decorative items made of papier-mâché, we recommend regularly dusting them with a soft cleaning cloth. Please note that this should not be wet or contain aggressive cleaning agents, as these can damage the coating. In addition, prolonged exposure to direct sunlight can fade the colours of papier-mâché. Therefore, place your decorations in a place where they are not continuously exposed to sunlight. In case of damage caused by sunlight, water/moisture, sharp objects, we recommend having your decorative item repaired by a professional.
Properties
- Eco-friendly: One of the biggest advantages of papier-mâché is that it is an eco-friendly material. It uses recycled materials such as waste paper, newspapers and magazines, making it a sustainable choice for creating works of art and decorative objects.
- Versatility: Papier-mâché is incredibly versatile and can be used to make a wide range of objects including decorative bowls, vases, lampshades, and more. It can be formed into almost any shape and size you want.
- Solid and lightweight: Papier-mâché is surprisingly sturdy and durable, even when it remains lightweight. This makes decorative objects easy to move around.
